The Majestics - Coming On / Funky Chick (Morsound Records 1001, 1969)
"Recorded 1969 at Robin Hood Brians Studios, Tyler. Producer: EH Moore. Originally released as Morsound 1001. Licensed by The Majestics.
Michael Sigler : tenor sax Lacy Burton : cornet Olen Porter : lead guitar Ronnie Allen : rhythm guitar Randell 'Rayshelle' Allen : organ Michael Gray : bass & leader JC Rogers : drums
Musicians not recorded : Cedric Williams (vocals), Dwayne Jackson (cornet), Garfield Black (drums), Charles Mayo (drums).
The Majestics Two Toned Funk Company made their first and only record on the Morsound label, owned and operated by EH Moore and his father. They pressed only 500 copies by the high school band - whose average age at the time was only 18 - but what a record! Bassist and leader Gray, who was the life and soul of the band, sets the pace with one of the most infectious bassliness in funk history, and Rayshelle's shouts and grunts do more than enough to drive the tune ruggedly onward.
Spurred on by the popularity of the single and having become bored with the limited opportunities afforded by the local gig circuit, they decided to aim at bigger things. Gray vividly remembers the old days " We were young and we had the spotlight on us. We thought we were stars and we wanted to hit the big stage! " So they packed their gear into a trailer home and set off on the 6 hour journey to Houston to try and make it into the bigtime. However, they didn't get far - their equipment was stolen and the trailer home burnt out following an argument with a promoter in Beaumont. This, coupled with the draft to Vietnam, meant the despondent musicians finally had to go their separate ways."
