Gimmicks was created in 1968 by the Swedish musician, producer, arranger Leif Carlquist. Inspired by the samba & bossa rhythms of Sergio Mendes he successfully shaped a unique image blend for his new group.
Gimmicks toured all over the continents - from Acapulco to Tokyo, from Bahamas to Vietnam, and all over Europe in between. Their worldwide journey was bordered with highly acclaimed performances as special guests or hosting their own show in radio and television.
Gimmicks enjoyed a fantastic career and reputation leading to bookings and offers such as daily gigs running for months at Las Brisas Hotel in Mexico or the tempting artist contract presented by Herb Alpert and his record company A&M Records. When Leif Carlquist, Gimmicks' bandleader, respectfully rejected the attractive offer, he made big headlines in the morning papers!
International attention soon led to a busy schedule and triumphs including loads of TV shows and stage performances with Ray Charles, Josephine Baker, Tony Bennett and T-Rex - and contributions at the Festival in Montreux in 1973 and at the Tokyo Music Song Festival in 1974 along with ten years of constant touring worldwide.
This is why many believed that Gimmicks were an international group and not, in fact, one of Sweden's first music exports. However, in 1974, they were granted the ultimate national accolade when chosen to perform at the wedding of King Carl Gustav of Sweden and his bride, Queen Silvia.
