Pi-R-Square – Fantasy / (Pt.2)
(Wee Records 1009, 1968? 70's)
réédité en 2001 sur Jazzman – JM.017
A Fantasy (Part 1) 4:21
B Fantasy (Part 2) 5:14
Lonnie Hewitt : claviers

"Pi-R-Square is a local band from San Francisco led by the late keyboard maestro Lonnie Hewitt. Throughout the '60s & '70s Hewitt played with many of the great names in West Coast jazz, among them Cal Tjader, Paul Horn, Preston Love and Mongo Santamaria. He also ran his own independent Wee Records label, and one of the records released early in the '70s was a little-known 9 minute instrumental obscurity called 'Fantasy'. Split into 2 parts placed on either side, the original was only ever issued on a small-holed 7" - unusual in the US for this type of music - and this bizzare slice of wax is also unusual in that it plays at 33rpm. We have re-released it here for the first time in it's full length as was originally intended.
Not every piece of funky jazz from the '70s is a heavy piece from start to finish. Borrowing elements from many styles and sounding well before its time, the music here is of a unique conception. The introduction is slow, slinky and deceptive - play both sides from the beginning and you'll notice an atmosphere building before a breakdown into one long tough funky jazz groove with an excellent dreamlike feel. Further breakdowns that cleverly lead into the moody atmosphere generated at the start add to the unusual style of this arrangment, making this remarkable and timeless record essential listening for any discerning music lover"

Re: Pi-R-Square – Fantasy
